The Maori name for Cape Palliser is Matakitaki-a-Kupe, commemorating a time when Kupe rested here and looked across to the South Island. For European sailors, this stretch of water was a constant danger, so in 1897 a manned lighthouse was erected on the site. It is no longer fuelled by oil, nor is it manned
it is powered by electricity and controlled from Wellington, but it still looks out towards the South Island.
