The Tararuas
The Tararua Ranges is considered one of the North Island great wilderness areas. The Tararua Forest Park hovers over the entire length of the Wairarapa Valley. Mitre Peak is the highest Peak at 1,570m in the Tararua Ranges, Which form a formidable, but impressive backdrop to the Wairarapa Valley in winter. Dusted in snow Mt Holdsworth at 1,470m is the scenic gateway for many trampers into the Tararua Ranges. The many other peaks of the Tararuas include Mt Hector, Girdlestone, Bannister and Dundas.
